As agreed, today we will talk about the project manager.

who is he Why is it needed? What competencies and skills should he have?

The project manager is the one who is responsible for the success of the project to the Customer.

In the picture below – the Key Areas of Project Management and the main Limitations of the project, that is what should be managed in the process of project implementation by its leader/manager.

project management

And in order to manage effectively, the project manager must develop in himself both technical and business,

as well as leadership and management qualities. After all, the Project is primarily PEOPLE, thanks to whom it is implemented.

Below I have tried to list the main qualities that a Project Manager should have.

Personal, managerial and leadership qualities:

to be flexible and able to adapt;
Be able to concentrate on several issues at the same time;
Show initiative;
be persuasive;
Have good communication skills;
— keep several goals in sight and find a balance between them;
— have planning and implementation skills;
— be stress-resistant and have the skills to “roll out” conflicts;
— have the ability to identify problems, find solutions and ensure their implementation;
Good time management;
Be able to convince and possess the skills of a negotiator;

  • To be diplomatic…
    Technical and business skills:
    — understanding how to organize a working group and manage its work;
    Ability to develop complex plans based on time and cost;
    — understanding of issues related to contracts, logistics, procurement, as well as personnel issues;
    — understanding of technologies, which plays the main role in ensuring the success of the project;
    Ability to transfer business strategy to project goals;
    understanding of the subject area;
    ….
    And this is far from a complete list, because each project is unique and may require additional competencies from the Project Manager.
    The development of these competencies is quite serious work on oneself. That is why a professional should manage the project. And if he is appointed as a project manager, he MUST NOT be an analyst, lead engineer, or developer. Because these are completely different tasks and often mutually exclusive of each other.
    There are of course exceptions to this rule, but in large and large projects, such exceptions often lead to project failure.
    I will explain why:
    — the project is a set of interrelationships, which must be monitored constantly, because if you get distracted, you have to “put out the fire”, and if the “domino” effect has worked, then one fire engine will not get by :-);
    — work of a specific focus, such as analytics, programming, testing, …. requires 100% involvement in what you do;
    — And to be involved in the performance of a specific task and at the same time be “OVER” the project and see ALL that is happening — IMPOSSIBLE…
    The main way to develop these skills is to participate in projects, and the more projects are implemented, the better certain skills are honed.
    However, sometimes a project manager needs support, as often PROJECT=STRESS.

And such support can be provided by:

Direct manager;
Professional communities;
Coach (here, under the rights of advertising, I suggest you look at some coaching programs developed by me).
The topic of the project manager’s work is very broad and multifaceted, and we will touch on certain aspects of it more than once

If you have specific questions, the answers to which will need to be covered on the site pages, then ask them using the feedback form or directly to e-mail.

Well, that’s all for today.

Good luck with your projects!!
